Secular Thursdays

Smrt Lernins hosts a blog group called “Secular Thursdays.” It’s a chance to bloghop and see what other secular homeschoolers have done during the week. In a culture where many of the homeschooling families we know are not only fairly religious, but homeschool for religious reasons, it gives the rest of us a chance to see how others are finding their way and a place in the community. I adore the religious homeschooling families I know- heck, we even use some religious curriculum! I love The Homeschool Lounge, and I just have to keep in mind that there is a definite, albeit incredibly kind and tolerant, belief system that tends to dominate the boards. Our family doesn’t exactly “fit the mold,” especially where we live, and it can be difficult to find groups that share similar ideals. I struggle to find groups and friendships for my children where they aren’t singled out as the only non-______. I’ve realized that I need to put some effort into finding those types of groups for myself as well. We all need a place of refuge where we feel free to be true to ourselves and let our guards down. Some people have Bible study, I’ll have Secular Thursdays. :) I signed up a while ago to do this, but then it fizzled. I have a renewed commitment and hope to be able to figure out how to put the button on my page soon!
